Sombrero in space

Tonight I put the scope together, solved a couple of little problems and then started pointing it around the place, Saturn, Mars, I even had a go at Pluto.

The sky was getting lighter as the moon rose but then I had a flash of inspiration. Why not take a stab at a galaxy. I looked at an app to see what was up and I thought I'd try a famous one. I've never seen another galaxy before the thought of looking at something so far away is exciting. So I punched it in to the computer, the scope slewed into position, and I looked through the eyepiece.

There it was. High in the sky a faint smudge on my lowest power, the Sombrero Galaxy. The photons that struck my eye then have been travelling for 28 million years before they hit my eye. They didn't strike a speck of dust along the way. This is what I saw (although, Hubble does a rather better job than my little scope can!)
