I brought up two children to be productive, happy, contributing and moral members of society. They are now adults, one with children. I did all of this without reference to a god or any other mythological beings. ( except for the Easter Bunny and Santa.)
I taught them to share, showed by example empathy and love. In short they were shown how to be happy and do good in our society. So far neither are sociopaths, criminals or lacking in any virtue which people value. They behave like this for its own sake, not for any promise of reward or fear of punishment.
Clearly I did something both right and correct or the results would not be there.
One easter my son aged about seven asked me what the religion he saw everywhere was about. I sat him down and told him the story of Jesus from birth to death and resurrection. I explained how many people live their lives following this path and believing this story. He just laughed, "Daddy", he said "That is just silly, once you are dead you are dead, you can't come back to life."
And the subject never came up again.
