Decorating St Peters

Now that the world is focussing on the Vatican I thought I would mention one item that struck me in Saint Peters Cathedral. Surrounding the main dome of the cathedral are four smaller domes. They each have a little tower ( a copula) with the usual painting inside the dome. I am convinced that if any one found an undecorated part of that pile of money and masonry, someone responsible would have gone to prison

The paintings were what struck me, I strained hard to see what they were and had to fit my telephoto lens to see them (I look at more religious art and artefacts than does Mrs Me who is at least nominally catholic.) As I was looking at this I realised that these were painted some 500 years ago before telescopes were invented (or just a little after) and the painters would believe that no one would ever see and appreciate their work.

Wouldn't you want to incorporate a medieval joke up there? I would.
